You might recognize Ricky Jay from his role as a cameraman in the eminently dreadful film Boogie Nights , as the techno-terrorist Henry Gupta in Tomorrow Never Dies , or from the HBO series Deadwood . But aside from acting, Jay was a master card sharp in the finest old school tradition. In this hour-long special produced by David Mamet, Jay tells the story of the history of the card cheat and conman, all the while showing the deftness of a lifetime devoted to sleight of hand and making a deck of cards do his bidding. In short, don’t play blackjack with this man.

If nothing else, I’m quite sure the funeral home would complain.

Damn it, I saw this yesterday morning, and was going to post an obit today.

Ricky Jay was the last of the true men of mystery. Of all things arcane. His wit unmatchable, his dexterity unfollowable, and his knowledge of history unfathomable.

I hope his personal library goes somewhere safe, somewhere where some kid in his/her teens has sole access to it, and the ability to soak it all in and keep it going forward.

If you’ve never read that New Yorker profile of him, you really should.

And the documentary about him from a few years ago, Deceptive Practice , may still be on streaming services... it’s great. Far from comprehensive, but. Great.

Damn. I scrolled past a tweet from Adam Savage about Ricky yesterday , but didn’t think anything of it.

I only ever saw him on Mythbusters. but from all indications he was a great guy.
